Artist Bio:

Born in 1995 in the Antilles, on the island of Guadeloupe. At the age of 8, Elladj leaves his home island for the Metropolis with his family. It is a total change, even a physical, mental and cultural revolution.

Through his works, the artist explores an open and vibrant approach to the relationship of people and imaginations. He carries out a work of experimentation and documentation, focusing on heritage, symbolic images as well as voodoo and kamite spiritualities. He focuses on daily life, mythologies, iconography, beliefs, the religious and cultural heritage of the Afro-Caribbean landscape.

Evoking a plural identity, He tries to analyze, deconstruct and grasp the fragments and communicating vessels. By merging objects found in his series of still life photographs, Elladj gives us different levels of reading, social and historical.

Elladj designs paintings and drawings that are very contrasted with the marker. For him, the black color is above all, a spiritual and sacred color. This colour serves as a support for creation but also for «destruction». He begins these portraits and still lifes with a black flat as a foreword, an introduction to a story that will begin. It is by working by hand that it comes then to erase or reveal this color by passages of pastel, pencil or oil in beige color bar.

His work is a form of initiatory journey, a reappropriation of an ancestral self that passes through a confrontation with its own darkness, before waking up to its own light. A transition from ignorance to self-awareness that requires the “killing” of illusions.
